This spring semester GRMR is proudly supporting RefuSHE, an organization that aims to empower and serve refugee women and children. RefuSHE’s admirable mission includes educating, protecting, and leading refugee women to offer them a chance to grow, develop, and flourish. Refugee girls and women remain an extremely vulnerable population, with about 76% of women and children refugees in Kenya and 52% under 18.
I would like to share a little about Hawa’s story, a resilient survivor born in Dadaab, living alone in a refugee camp. Hawa was sexually assaulted and became pregnant at the age of 15. She bravely left her camp and came to Nairobi, where she found the RefuSHE’s safe house. This safe house allowed Hawa, and many other refugees, a chance to experience a loving, secure, and empowering community. After having her baby, Hawa enrolled in the Girls Empowerment Project and began working on developing her education and skills. Because of RefuSHE, Hawa and women alike are given a chance to embrace their authentic selves and have an opportunity to experience life beyond a refugee camp.
I couldn’t be more excited to support RefuSHE this semester, and I hope that by learning more about this organization, you all will be too. I would also like to thank our highly hard-working and dedicated members who come to all our fundraising events to support and volunteer. Your work is truly making a difference for women like Hawa. We couldn’t do this without each and every one of you.
